The most influential woman in your life

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Alecx Barredo, a member of our Youth Advisory Panel, shares a heartfelt reflection on the most influential woman in her life. Read Alecx’s piece here:

I was asked, “Who is the most influential woman in your life?”

I replied, “She married her first boyfriend in hopes of a simple yet happy life together, but he ended up hurting her. Instead of wallowing in pain, she raised her two daughters in a nurturing and loving environment – my mum.”

Growing up, my mother always reminded us to be kind, gentle, and, most of all, forgiving. She would say, “Extend a helping hand when you can and don’t be too quick to judge a person because you never know what they are going through”. But we must be discerning in whom we trust. No matter how strong and brave she may be, she has carefully revealed to us her vulnerabilities, and she became even more beautiful in our eyes.

My mum grew up surrounded by aunties who loved to gather and converse in Bisaya while playing Scrabble. Their laughter would resonate through the house, and they have inspired me to keep speaking my mother tongue. I enjoy my language’s charms and share in my grandmothers’ joy.

These women play a significant part in my life, which moulded me into the kind of woman I am today – compassionate and courageous. Happy International Women’s Day!
